Unprecedented use of carbon fibre. Components calibrated with unforgiving precision. Polestar 1 is tuned and tested until it’s as close to perfection as we can measure.

We went to great lengths to wind test Polestar 1. Optimising the car’s aerodynamics required a three-ton fan, a steel tunnel measuring 11 metres in diameter and 163 metres in length, a heat exchanger the size of a wall, 24 hours of computer simulations, innumerable six-hour shifts, and a whole lot of liquid nitrogen smoke.

When the Polestar 1’s speed exceeds 65 mph, an active rear spoiler raises automatically from its integrated flush position.

We stripped away unnecessary material to create a minimalistic frameless design that improves the car’s aerodynamics.

Ten times stronger than steel. Five times lighter. Carbon fibre-reinforced polymer makes up almost the entire upper body of Polestar 1. It’s bonded to the steel underbody, increasing torsional stiffness by 45 percent.

Accidents aren’t planned, but they can be planned for. We assessed the strength of Polestar 1’s carbon fibre-reinforced polymer body in hundreds of crash situations at different speeds and various angles on our 157 m track. Every test was documented by a dozen 1,000 fps cameras and scrutinised by safety experts.
