Charging of the hybrid batteries

In addition to a conventional fuel tank, the vehicle is also equipped with two rechargeable lithium-ion hybrid batteries.

The hybrid batteries are charged using the charging cable, which is stowed in the storage bag in the side panel of the trunk. The charging bag is attached using a magnetic snap and can be removed by lifting it straight up.

The hybrid batteries can also be charged at charging stations using the integrated charge module. The charging stations can be equipped with either a fixed charging cable or a socket in which a special charging cable with a matching connector (a mode 3 charging cable) can be plugged in.

Rapid charging

In addition to charging via a 230 V outlet (alternating current), the vehicle also supports direct-current rapid charging at charging stations supporting the CCS (Combined Charging System) standard. Charging with direct current usually enables higher charging output and thereby shorter charging times. The highest charging output is normally achieved when the charge level of the hybrid batteries is 0-80%. When the charge level rises, the output will be decreased to reduce wear.

Polestar recommends a charging cable according to SAE J1772 that supports temperature monitoring.

 Warning

The hybrid electrical system in your vehicle uses high voltage electrical current. Any damage to this system or to the hybrid batteries may result in the danger of overheating, fire, or serious injury. If the vehicle is involved in a collision or exposed to flooding, fire, etc., contact Polestar Customer Support. Prior to this inspection, the vehicle should be parked outdoors at a safe distance from any building or potentially flammable materials.

The charging time for the hybrid batteries depends on the charging output used.

 Note

The capacity of the hybrid batteries diminishes somewhat with age and use, which could result in increased use of the gasoline engine and consequently, slightly higher fuel consumption.

Charging status is indicated in three ways:
  • The indicator lights in the charging module (the unit connected to the wall outlet).
  • Indicator light in the vehicle's charging socket.
  • Images and text in the instrument panel.

The start battery is charged while the hybrid batteries are charging and stops charging when the hybrid batteries are fully charged. The vehicle cannot be driven while it is being charged.

If the temperature of the hybrid batteries is below -10 ºC (14 ºF) or above 40 ºC (104 ºF), some of the vehicle's functions may be reduced or not available at all because the capacity of the hybrid batteries is reduced outside this temperature range.

The electric motor cannot be used if the temperature of the batteries is too low or too high. If the PURE drive mode is selected, the gasoline engine will start.

The vehicle is generating current to recharge the batteries, e.g. during light braking or engine braking on a downslope.

The vehicle can also generate current to the hybrid batteries to charge them.

  • The hybrid batteries can also be recharged by lightly depressing the brake pedal, i.e. during light braking. This converts the vehicle's kinetic energy to electrical energy, which is used to charge the hybrid batteries.
  • In gear position B, the electric motor brakes the vehicle when the accelerator pedal is released and the hybrid batteries are recharged at the same time.
  • The combustion engine can also help recharge the hybrid batteries.
